School Profile - Faculties - Science

The Science department is staffed by a dynamic team of teachers who are all trained in specialist subject areas. The Science faculty is staffed by:

  • Mrs Ferguson

  • Ms Barrand

  • Ms Serisier

  • Mrs Duke

  • Mr Ferris

  • Mr Kimura

  • Mrs Taylor

  • Mrs Wooster is our Laboratory Assistant.

Years 7-10

Science in years 7 to 10 is a mandatory Board of Studies subject. Students are taught a variety of the traditional subject areas such as Chemistry, Biology and Physics with a real world focus.

Students in years 8-10 have an opportunity to enter into extension classes on the basis of their achievement, commitment to studies and interest in Science.

Years 11 and 12

Students elect to take courses in 2 unit Science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics or Senior Science.

Opportunities

Many other opportunities are available for students in Science. Each year students are encouraged to participate in:

  • The Australasian Schools Science Competition

  • Australian National Chemistry Quiz

  • Siemens Science Experience

  • National Youth Science Forum

  • Forensic Science Camp

  • Eco Club

Excursions

Each year students have the opportunity to experience either an in school excursion or off site school excursion.  These have included the Zoo or Reptile Show for year 7, CSIRO Lab on Legs or Rock Platform Excursion for year 8, Science festival outing or IMAX/Aquarium/Wildlife World for year 9 and Science Festival Excursion to Canberra bi-annually for year 10 students.

Senior students also have the opportunity to engage in ecosystem studies, visits to the Museum of Disease at UNSW, touring Lucas Heights Nuclear Research Facility (ANSTO) and visiting a satellite tracking station.

These many varied experiences provide students with real world links to Science.
